Lil Durk has achieved a legal victory by preventing the words to his songs from being used as evidence in his impending murder-for-hire trial.
The court decided that the drill star’s music could no longer be used as evidence in the future, even if it refused him bail once more for breaking the jail’s phone restrictions.
The lyrics of Durk’s song “Wonderful Wayne & Jackie Boy” were crucial to the prosecution’s case and to getting the rapper arrested in the first place.
The words of the song, according to the prosecution, described the 2022 attack on Quando Rondo that resulted in his cousin’s murder.
Nonetheless, the rapper’s legal team was successful in proving that the song was composed and published months prior to Rondo’s fatal assault.
It is alleged that Durk offered Rondo a monetary reward in retaliation for the murder of King Von two years prior.
During the trial, Durk’s family had already criticized the authorities for their intentions to use his songs against him.
The drill star’s family criticized the prosecution’s conduct in an Instagram statement.
They stated: “A painful reality has been revealed by the latest events in Durk’s case: the government provided a grand jury with fake evidence in order to indict him. This isn’t fair. That is against the very system that is meant to keep us all safe.
“Durk has always used music to tell stories, to express pain, to heal—and yet those same lyrics are now being used against him,” the statement goes on to say. Black artists are still being criminalized for their work, and we will not remain silent. Rap is art.
“As a family, we are asking the public, the fans, and the culture to stand with us,” the family said, urging supporters to support Durk while he is still in jail before his trial later this year. Be a truth-teller. Be a fair person. Be a voice for the voice.
