From 1989 to 1993, Hans Dobson, better known by his stage name “Prime,” hosted BET’s “Rap City” as an early presenter. Unfortunately, the cherished host passed away not long ago from an unidentified illness.
“He was 55 years old and had liver problems that had him waiting on the transplant list,” a family member wrote on Facebook.
Among the famous people Prime interviewed while working for BET were a young JAY-Z and Big Daddy Kane.Because of his in-depth knowledge of hip-hop culture, he was selected as BET’s youngest employee at the time. During its early years, Prime was crucial in determining the course of the program.
Dobson kept a quiet profile after leaving “Rap City,” but he kept up his radio and media work. Over the years, he has taken part in a lot of interviews and “Rap City” reunions. He had an appearance in the 2023 documentary series “Welcome to Rap City,” which delves into the cultural effects and history of the event.
Former BET VP of music productions Sam Walker II claimed to be Prime’s coworker and admirer. In addition, he was the executive producer of the documentary “Welcome To Rap City.”
“As a teenager, I had the chance to be a fan of Prime’s by watching ‘Rap City’ and its several hosts, and I later collaborated with him as a producer on the documentary ‘Welcome To Rap City,'” he tells AllHipHop. Unbeknownst to most, he was the impetus behind the establishment of Rap City, a vehicle that launched numerous careers. He was a fervent admirer of hip-hop music.
As an individual, he exuded vitality and enthusiasm, and his enthusiasm for urban culture was unparalleled. As a result, I am glad we could give him his flowers while he was still here. He genuinely exemplifies how one person, with the appropriate concept, at the appropriate moment, can help spark an entire movement.”
Prime’s contributions to “Rap City” and the broader hHip-Hop community are remembered and appreciated.
