Many people compared Lil Yachty’s recent change to his characteristic hairstyle to the 90s Mase at this weekend’s Rolling Loud festival. Lil Boat played alongside the surf while wearing a color-coordinating ensemble reminiscent of Mase’s music videos from the early 2000s. “You like my new haircut or what?” he inquired, smiling as he addressed the audience. On Friday, December 13, jokes comparing the two musicians went viral on social media. One commenter joked, “Him and Mase, father and son in another life.”

“We should ask Mase and Little Yachty’s mother where they were both nine months before Yachty was born,” someone else joked. “Hell no, he truly Mase in ’97,” said others, adding to the famous event with memes and tagging Mase for his response. It is unclear where Yachty got the idea for her new appearance. However, the shift comes after the rap musician faced criticism for his musical views and a falling out with former Concrete Boys member Karrahbooo and his buddy and co-host Mitch.

In 2024, Mase made the switch from rap artist to sports broadcaster with his new show It Is What It Is, co-hosted by his former rival Cam’ron. He still maintains the distinctive fade. One of the biggest hip-hop performers of the late 1990s, Mase was well-known for his colorful attire and worked with artists such as Mariah Carey, Notorious B.I.G., DMX, Jay-Z, and Ye. On their broadcast, Mase and Cam’ron periodically perform fresh freestyles.

At Rolling Loud, Lil Yachty played a Concrete Boys set. Yachty seemed indifferent to the backlash on social media, enjoying the moment and slickly retaining his position as a cultural influencer. The rapper’s ability to start conversations is still as strong as ever, whether they are sporting bold hairstyles or traditional cuts. 2024 proved to be a successful year for Lil Yachty. The Atlanta native’s favorite was the collaborative record with James Blake.
