Melinda French Gates says Bill Gates must address questions about his connection to the Epstein files, speaking publicly for the first time since newly released documents included references to her former husband.
In a recent appearance on NPR’s Wild Card podcast, Melinda shared that seeing Bill Gates’ name in the latest batch of Justice Department records brought a deep sense of sorrow. She described the experience as “unbelievably sad,” reflecting on the emotional weight of the situation.
“Those Questions Need Answers”
Melinda made it clear that any unresolved concerns should be addressed directly by those involved.
She emphasized that if there are lingering questions related to the documents, the responsibility to respond lies with the individuals named — including her ex-husband — and not with her. She also noted that she feels relieved to be removed from what she described as a difficult and troubling environment.
At the heart of her remarks was compassion for the victims. Melinda spoke emotionally about the young women affected by Jeffrey Epstein’s actions, calling their experiences heartbreaking and stressing that no girl should ever endure such circumstances. As a mother, she said the situation resonates deeply, reminding her of her own daughters at similar ages.
What the Newly Released Files Contain
Bill Gates is among several high-profile figures referenced in millions of pages of documents connected to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
Some of the material includes emails Epstein sent to himself in 2013, in which he made claims about Gates’ personal life and alleged behavior. These messages contained unverified assertions, including suggestions of an extramarital relationship and requests for illicit substances.
A spokesperson for Gates strongly rejected the claims, calling them “false and absurd.” The statement added that the documents primarily reflect Epstein’s frustration over not maintaining an ongoing relationship with Gates and suggested that Epstein was attempting to damage his reputation.
Past Personal Strains Come Back Into Focus
The renewed attention has also reopened painful chapters from Melinda and Bill Gates’ past. The couple ended their 27-year marriage in 2021. At the time, Bill Gates acknowledged having had an affair with a Microsoft employee and publicly took responsibility for the hurt caused to his family.
Melinda later stepped down from her role as co-chair of the Gates Foundation in 2024, marking another major transition in her life.

Speaking candidly, she shared that the recent developments have resurfaced difficult memories from the final years of their marriage. Ultimately, she said she felt it was necessary to leave both the marriage and, eventually, the foundation in order to move forward.
Moving Forward While Seeking Justice
Despite the emotional impact, Melinda described herself as being in a positive and unexpected place today. She said she has consciously chosen to move on and focus on rebuilding her life.
At the same time, she expressed hope that justice will continue for the women affected by Epstein and his network.
Broader Context Around the Epstein Case
The newly released records mention multiple prominent figures across politics, business, and entertainment. Many of those named — including Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Prince Andrew, and Bill Clinton — have denied wrongdoing and have not been charged with crimes related to Epstein.
