Kid Cudi, a hip-hop veteran, has made history by introducing the acoustic guitar in his new track, “Neverland.”

One of the rapper’s most experimental songs since the release of his 2015 album Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven, the opening segment of the song notably contains an acoustic guitar with an alternative rock flavor.

Later, the song transitions into a chorus with stadium rock influences, as Cudi croons, significantly referencing the song’s Peter Pan theme: “Sailing to our neverland / We’ll never die, you and I / Chasing something that’ll last / We’ll never die, you and I.”

Cudi shared his thoughts on the song and the title of his upcoming album, Free, in a long Instagram post.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, my friends,” he wrote. Enjoy it, everyone. You may listen to and take this with you in your life since I truly put my heart and soul into this song. bringing you happiness with every listen. As always, this is from the heart to all of my fans: I love you. Enjoy your time in Neverland.

“Just so you know, the album is called FREE Get Ready, and it will take you to new places, my friends.”

Cudi gave some details about the upcoming album in a March interview with Hube. The question regarding what “makes a collaborative project successful” prompted it.

“I’ve been excited about this new direction I’m taking with my album because I put myself in an uncomfortable situation to achieve it,” he stated. “I wasn’t sure if I would even be able to sing at the level required to accomplish this record properly when I first started working on it. It had an impact on me as an artist to work on these songs, work with the producers and authors, and create music from the ground up.

It’s been a while since I produced anything like this. Years have passed. I was assembling an album using beats from various individuals for my most recent projects, but there’s something really satisfying about sitting in a room and making something from nothing—just a simple hum.
